CHICAGO – Every four years, non-NBC television stations across the country struggle to cover the Olympic Games. Why’s that? NBC has exclusive rights to the event and limits the amount of video other stations can show to just two minutes within a six-hour period.
Pat Tomasulo, sportscaster for our Tribune affiliate WGN in Chicago, decided to have a little fun with the limitations. Instead of covering the Olympics, Tomasulo opted to cover ‘The International Athletic Competition Run by One of the Most Corrupt Organizations in the World’ and aired footage of his own high school wrestling career while finding a clever way to report on the events in Rio without specifically talking about them.
