Fairmount Park announcer set to retire at the end of the racing season

COLLINSVILLE, IL (KPLR) – The end of an era at Fairmount Park is coming soon and the search is on to find another voice to call races at the track.

At Fairmount Park long time track announcer John Scully will call it a career when the horse racing season ends this year.  He's been at Fairmount Park for 47 years making him the longest tenured track announcer in the country.

John Scully says: "I’ll miss the calling of the races, because I like doing it. I'll miss my friends that are up here. But it's time to go. When your 70 years old you're going down the hill rather than up the hill, and it's time for my wife and myself do some traveling in the summertime. We do some in the fall and winter, but never get a chance in the summer because I’m here."

Scully estimates he's called between 75,000 to 100,000 races during his career.
