Red Cross asking for bood donations to fight summer shortages

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - Kelly Griswold is a 22-year-old senior at Mizzou. She suffered a near-fatal accident riding on the back of a wave runner two summers ago.  She had three surgeries over two days and needed numerous units of blood to save her life.

Griswold says she donates every chance she gets because, "What takes me 5-10 minutes to donate gives someone something priceless, their life."

The Red Cross's second annual lifesaver blood drives slated for August 5, 6 and 8 in Missouri and Illinois. In the U.S., every two seconds, someone needs blood or platelets. The goal of the drives is to create awareness of summer blood shortages, and replenish supplies ensuring hospitals and patients have the blood products they need to save lives.

The Red Cross issued an emergency need for blood and platelet donations on July 5 that was extended through August 15. They're thanking those who come in to donate blood or platelets between July 25 and Aug. 31 by emailing them a $5 gift card claim code.
