PRAIRIE DU ROCHER, IL (KPLR) - The small village of Prairie Du Rocher is hoping a fundraising effort will prevent the historic community from coming to an end.

Village leaders say the community levee needs certification.  The certification requires a federal study.  The community estimates the cost of certification will require $62,000.

Without the certification, village leaders say flood insurance rates will skyrocket.  The higher rates could force homeowners to leave, and would prevent new businesses from building.

Community leaders say the levee was certified approximately 10 years ago, but a new certification is required because of post-Katrina requirements.
