ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR)- A spokesman for Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport confirmed Wednesday night that firefighters were called to a departing flight heading for St. Louis because of a backpack on fire.

The culprit appears to have been an e-cig device on Delta flight 689.  By the time fire crews arrived, the bag had been extinguished. No one was injured, and with the exception of a brief delay, passengers were not otherwise impacted by the incident.

One passenger tweeted about what he saw on the plane.

The devices will be banned entirely from flights starting next month under new rules in place from the U.S. Department of Transportation.  They have been restricted to carry-on baggage since last year.
