ST. PETERS (KPLR) - St. Peters police say a man has been secretly taping women undressing in fitting rooms at Mid-Rivers Mall, using a cell phone camera hidden in a shopping bag.

The investigation began last week after a woman noticed a bag kept appearing and disappearing outside her fitting room door every time she went in to change clothes. By the time she realized the bag had a hole in it with a cell phone hidden inside, the bag was gone, and so was the person who planted it.

Police say the suspect is 47-year-old Bryan Roberts from Troy, Missouri. He was arrested at a mall in Chesterfield after he was seen trying to do the same thing there.

Police say his phone had videos of other victims; some partially undressed, others naked.

“We have about 20 different women,” said Officer Melissa Doss, a spokeswoman for the St. Peters Police Department.

“We only have three identified. They come from various stores; some of the stores we have been able to identify, some of the stores we are not sure what they are, which is why we are not giving out the store names because we don`t know all the stores involved.”

When Chesterfield police went to arrest Roberts, they say he ran from them and threw away his cell phone, but they recovered it and caught him near Interstate 64 and Boone’s Crossing.

The videos on the phone led investigators back to St. Peters, which then led to the discovery of two other victims: one a store employee who was secretly recorded under her skirt while working the cash register.

“One takeaway in this case is our victim did the right thing,” said St. Charles County Prosecutor Tim Lohman. “Something didn’t quite look right. Maybe it was nothing, maybe it was something. She did the right thing. She called it to the attention of security and they took it from there.”

Investigators are hoping other women who changed clothes in a fitting room while shopping at Mid-Rivers Mall between December 26 and January 8 will come forward if they noticed a suspicious bag at their fitting room door.

Roberts is charged with two counts of invasion of privacy, but could face additional charges. He is free on a $20,000 bond.
