ST. LOUIS (KPLR) – He’s become known as the “Billboard Guy.” Daniel “Bonne” Fuller spent night number 12 on one of his billboards. It’s located at the corner of Washington Blvd and Sarah St in St. Louis City. He vows to live on the corner until St. Louis goes 7 consecutive days without a murder.
“We can do it,” said Fuller.
He hopes the attention will inspire others to get involved.
“St. louis is not a war zone,” said Fuller. “People need help.”
Freeman Bosley, Jr. agreed to spend the night in the same location. Monday was the former St. Louis mayor’s 61st birthday.
“For him to come and sit up right here in the middle of the neighborhood I think that should get everybody, it should get some people’s attention,” said Bosley.
Fuller went up on the billboard July 9th. The longest stretch without a murder after that was 4 days. He’s met several relatives of murder victims.
“Dozens and dozens have showed me pictures and it’s just heartbreaking,” said Fuller.
He operates Fuller Outdoor Advertising as AdUnity Media, and hopes the messages on his billboards sink in.
“Spill paint, not blood. Put down the pistol. Stop and think, stop the violence,” said Fuller.
Former homicide detective Steve Harmon is running for the officer of St. Louis Circuit Attorney. Harmon says he makes periodic checks on Fuller and supports his efforts.
“For him to come up here and do what he’s doing in the heat that we’ve experienced in the past week, I think his efforts have certainly drawn attention to the problem,” said Harmon.
Fuller says he’s also run into skeptics who don’t think a white businessman can care about violence in predominately black communities.
“I’ve been in the neighborhood 30 years, 12 hours a day,” said Fuller. “They don’t know me.”
Fuller says he’s talked to kids who at time fear being outside in their own neighborhood.
“I grew up my entire life not being afraid, and I want them to experience that too.”
