ST. CHARLES, MO (KTVI)- MoDOT will mark a major milestone Thursday in the construction of an important link between St. Louis and St. Charles Counties. A new span of the Daniel Boone Bridge will open in just a few days.

Thursday's ribbon-cutting event is expected to draw a crowd of various officials who will celebrate the opening of the new eastbound I-64 Daniel Boone Missouri River Bridge. It's a $100 million project that's two and a half years in the making and today they cross the finish line.

This new bridge replaces the original eastbound span into St. Louis County. Opening the new eastbound bridge to traffic let's crews begin rehabbing the current eastbound bridge. That bridge is going to close later this year. It will re-open to westbound traffic entering St. Charles.

All of these changes are going to disrupt traffic this weekend. Up to two lanes of traffic will be closed on eastbound I-64 starting Friday evening. They'll remain closed throughout the weekend.

MoDOT is advising drivers to avoid this area and use alternate routes like I-70 and Route 364.

The new eastbound bridge will open in time for the Monday morning commute.
