WELLSTON, MO (KPLR) – The City of Wellston held a news conference Tuesday about the move to dissolve its police department.
Mayor Nathaniel Griffin took a few questions from the media during the news conference, which sparked some anger in the crowd.
He said the council decided to team with Vinita Park and Vinita Terrace for police services.
It’s being called the “North County Co-Operative.”
He said that it will save the city thousands of dollars and improve police service for residents.
He told FOX 2 “about 14” officers were let go as a result of the decision.
Former Wellston Chief of Police G.T. Walker was offered a job with the “North County Co-Operative.”
However, the chief declined to take the job. He said he “couldn’t take the job in good conscience” after his officers were let go.
The 14 officers will have a chance to apply for jobs with the new department.
The change began Monday.
