Man holding BB gun shot, killed by police
Kingman, AZ (KVVU) — Police in northwestern Arizona said a man shot and killed by an officer, who was responding to a domestic violence call, was holding a BB gun at the time of the incident. Mohave County Sheriff’s Office said the incident happened about 9:45 a.m. Wednesday in the 2200 block of Lucille Avenue in Kingman, AZ.
According to the sheriff’s office, a field training officer and a trainee were responding to the call of a man punching holes in the wall of a home and acting violently. During the incident, 31-year-old Ryan Dean Burgess was met with the officers at his front door while pointing a gun at them, according to the sheriff’s office.
Police commanded the man to drop the weapon. One of the officers, who was identified as Officer Chaz Truver, opened fire at Burgess, killing him. Police later determined Burgess was holding a CO2-powered BB gun, which was a replica of a semi-automatic pistol.
One of the officers was treated at a local hospital for a knee injury.
The sheriff’s office said alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident.
