GRANITE CITY, IL (KPLR)- The second of three explosions needed to bring down the old Chain of Rocks Canal Bridge is slated to take place Tuesday morning. Crews will completely shut down I-270 between Riverview Boulevard in north city and Route 3 in Granite City starting at 10a.m. The interstate should reopen within two hours.

Tuesday morning`s explosion will take care of the old westbound side. A third explosion to take place in the near future will bring down the rest of the old structure. Traffic on eastbound I-270 will be diverted onto Riverview when the closure happens. Westbound I-270 traffic will have to get off at Route 3.

When crews closed I-270 in the same area at the same time two weeks ago, the highway completely reopened by around 11:45a.m. The public can once again come out and watch from the old Chain of Rocks Road Canal Bridge. You may have to walk up to a half a mile from where you park to the viewing area.

The new Chain of Rocks Canal Bridge opened both ways last year.
