ST. LOUIS (KPLR) - Retail experts say more $274 billion dollars in gift cards will be sold in the U.S. this year. Making the retail market a feeding ground for thieves.

There are ways to secure your purchase; Chris Thetford with the Better Business Bureau says for starters buying cards on auction sites is a bad idea.

For smaller stores like Kaldis Coffee selling gift cards is a simple process.  They keep a close eye on how the cards are handled, securing them behind the counter.

The BBB also suggests you have them check out by your vendor. It`s also a good idea to make sure the card is validated at the register before you leave and paying by credit card is your safest option.
