Retired St. Louis police officer, wife & son injured in house fire

ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) - A late night fire critically injures a retired St. Louis police officer and his wife. Neighbors say the couple, John and Joan Rice, have lived in the home for over forty years.

Firefighters answered the call for two people trapped in the Compton Heights home on Virginia between Geyer and Russell. Their son was also in the home. He was also taken to the hospital and is listed in serious but stable condition.

Investigators say the cause of the fire was an unattended lit candle left the the son in a bedroom.  The names of the victims are not being released.
