OAKVILLE, MO (KPLR)-

Authorities believe a lightning strike may have caused a fire that did heavy damage to part of an Oakville apartment complex. The fire occurred at the Hunter`s Ridge Apartment Homes off of Lemay Woods Drive in Oakville.

Fire crews received the call around 8:40a.m. Thursday morning. The fire quickly grew to three alarms.

Authorities evacuated residents from several units in the immediate area surrounding the fire. When crews arrived, flames were shooting out of a third story unit. That is where authorities believe the fire likely started.

Jodi Benson lives in that third story unit with her two daughters. She says she heard a very loud lightning clap and thunder boom early this morning. A little later, she heard a crackling noise and came outside to check it out.

At that point, Benson saw flames shooting from her unit.

It took crews from several different departments about an hour to get the flames under control. Two residents received some medical attention for having some shortness of breath.

Authorities say Jodi`s unit and one other apartment are gutted from the flames. A couple of other units have substantial smoke and water damage.

No injuries have been reported.
