WEBSTER GROVES, MO (KPLR) - North Forest Avenue Tuesday afternoon.  The garage was a loss but firefighters kept the flames from spreading.

Neighboring departments responded to help give firefighters a break from the heat.

“We like to see them take a break every 10-15 minutes and hydrate,” said Webster Groves Fire Chief Mike Capriglione.

He estimated the temperature underneath their protective gear to be near 110 degrees.

“We keep cool towels in the cooler” said Capriglione.   “Guys can drape that around their neck,”

The department also set up small fans to try and help cool of firefighters and had coolers of cold water.  Capriglione said during periods of extreme heat firefighters are at risk of heat exhaustion from putting out the fire and from gathering up all the hoses after the flames are out.

The chief said it was too soon to know the cause of the fire.  Firefighters on the scene said it did not appear to be suspicious.  No one was hurt.
