Winfield execution scheduled for midnight; stay of execution vacated

ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) - A stay of execution for John Winfield has been vacated by a panel of judges on Tuesday. He is scheduled to die by lethal injection at 12:01am Wednesday. Still pending is an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

A jury convicted him of shooting and killing Arthea Sanders and Shawnee Murphy at their Vinita Park apartment in 1996.

Earlier a three-judge panel ruled that winfield's execution should be delayed. A federal judge issued also issed a stay last week. She ruled Missouri correctons officials may have intimidated an employee who wanted to support clemency for Winfield.
