ST. LOUIS (KPLR) – Think back a few years: Fat-free foods were all the rage. Seemingly health-conscious consumers gobbled up formerly sinful treats, everything from fat-free ice cream to potato chips to pound cake and Danish. What happened? Americans got fatter! The reason? As fats were removed, more sugars were added, and eventually the body converts those sugars to excess fat in our bodies.
Fast-forward to today: Nutritional thinking on fats now emphasizes moderate intake of healthy fats, like those found in salmon, tuna, avocados, nuts and other lean proteins. In fact, some research suggests fats can help people lose weight and provide essential heart-health benefits.
