ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – Long wait times for mental health treatment are sparking an investigation into the St. Louis VA Hospital.

The former chief of psychiatry at the hospital claims veterans often wait a month or more for treatment because of a lax work environment. Doctor Jose Mathews claims he was demoted because of a staff “mutiny” after he tried to make employees work harder and more efficiently.

Senators Claire McCaskill and Roy Blunt have sent a joint letter to Veterans Affairs about the issue. The hospital is investigating the complaints as well as the feds.

Once, we waited nine hours at the ER for a Doctor to arrive. What? And on some occasions, he was stashed in the terminal ward for lack of space for him. All of it hastened his death. On the day he died, we received a letter telling us his disability claim was still being processed. He knew he couldn’t work and saw no hope for the future. No one was making a fuss then (2001). I was appalled. Tags stolen from our car several times, outside the ER. Dangerous area at night. Parking a nightmare.
