Hazelwood East celebrates NFL draft success

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KPLR) – Hazelwood East High School is in the national sports spotlight.   The school is being recognized for the number of graduates who have become NFL players.

Maxprpeps.com is a website that is a source for high school sports all over the country.  Maxpreps.com has named the Hazelwood East football program as one of the top 23 high school programs in the country with the most alumni drafted into the NFL over the past 20 years.

Many of the star names are painted on the wall in a Hazelwood East gym.  Williams, Fletcher, Germany, Starks.  Nine former Spartans have made it to the NFL including two players who were selected in this year’s draft, Walt Powell and Christian Kirksey.  They both played on the 2008 Hazelwood East team that won the state championship.

The current head coach says the legacy of Hazelwood East’s football success is built on administration and alumni support, academics and discipline.

Coach Aaron Whittington told our Dan Gray, “I’m just really excited as an alumni, as head coach here, it’s a great representation of our school and our community. And if you truly work hard and you have the discipline and work ethic anything is possible, and that’s the thing we want to reinforce and I’m proud to say all of those individuals also have graduated from college.”

Coach Whittington says in addition to the nine former Spartans drafted into the NFL, he says at least another nine Hazelwood East alumni have made it to the NFL as free agents.
