BRIDGETON (KTVI) – The EPA will screen for radiation at Bridgeton Municipal Athletic Complex. This is all over concerns about contamination for the Westlake and Bridgeton landfills.
This move by the EPA comes after residents in this area got an independent screening done that showed a spike in radioactive material.
The Westlake and Bridgeton landfills have been sources of concern for quite some time, specifically, the radioactive waste and an underground fire at the sites. And the horrible smell in the area recently pushed the current owners to settle a multi-million dollar civil lawsuit with residents.
At noon Friday, the mayor of Bridgeton and the EPA will hold a news conference at city hall to release details about the screening. The hope is that the testing will ease public concern, which may be at an all-time high.
