ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR)- Checkmate. On Monday, the United States Senate passed a resolution recognizing Saint Louis as the National Chess Capital. Senate Res. 102 was introduced by Senators Claire McCaskill (D-MO) and Roy Blunt (R-MO). It also recognizes the success of chess after-school programs, helping students with problem-solving skills and improving math and reading test scores.
Starting Wednesday, the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis will host the 2014 U.S. Chess Championship and 2014 U.S. Women’s Championship. Matches will run through May 20. This is the sixth consecutive year that these events will be held in St. Louis.
