Chesterfield threatens to secede from St. Louis County

CHESTERFIELD, MO (KPLR) – Chesterfield city leaders are upset about the way sales tax is distributed in St. Louis County.
Our partners with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch are reporting that Mayor Bob Nation said he wants the constitutionality of the system to be looked at and if nothing changes the city would consider seceding from St. Louis County.
He said the city pays the County about 56 percent of all sales tax generated.
He also added that the city “needs” the money to pay its bills.
The city has experienced a jump in sales tax revenue since two outlet malls were open.
City leaders hope state lawmakers change the system, but at this point no action has been taken.
