(KPLR)-After years of operating in the red, the Schnucks grocery store located on N. Grand Blvd. between Kossuth and Lee Ave is scheduled to close on May 10. North city church and community leaders are hoping to change that.
Leaders have planned a rally at 5:00pm Monday in front of the Schnucks store near Fairground Park. They hope that Todd Schnuck and Marvin Properties will schedule a meeting to discuss options for keeping the full-service grocery store and pharmacy open.
The leaders say the closure will be a hardship, calling the store a great benefit for the many senior-aged residents unable to travel long distances for fresh produce and necessary prescriptions. They also say another vacant building is not what the community needs.
Schnucks decided not to renew the lease at the N. Grand location. The store was purchased in the 1995 National Grocery store acquisition.
Schnucks operates 8 other markets within the St. Louis City limits.
