WRIGHT CITY, MO (KTVI) – The only permanent mud run and obstacle course in the Midwest is set to empower military veterans and help kids in Haiti with “The Battleground Mud Run” in Wright City, Missouri, over the weekend.
Thursday morning, Carl Bolm counted down for staff testing the course.
They tried to make it to the end for those who made it home.
Athletes were invited to take on mud, hill, rope and chain obstacles like “The Gauntlet”. It stood over 15 feet of murky, cold water. Registration fees would help fund transitional programs for The Mission Continues.
Lori Patterson explained veterans often need help translating their vast military experience onto a civilian resume.
She should know. She is a specialist with the United States Army, “I’m in the fitness industry. So, we can bring the veterans into the fitness industry, let them mentor under us to see if this is an industry they want to enter.”
Bolm, owner of the The Battleground, explained what else the five-mile course had in store for the endurance philanthropists, “We’ve got 170 acres with over 30 military-style obstacles for your average runner or for people that want to come out as a group. So, male, female, we have it all out here.”
After the race, there would even be an opportunity to help kids through the Barrel Aid charity.
“If you want to donate your shoes, your dirty shoes, they will clean them up and send the shoes off to Haiti for kids without shoes,” Bolm explained.
Lori’s husband, Tony, is also an Army specialist. He said infrastructure in Haiti is unreliable for the growing boys and girls, “It’s really not that great. It’s water. Water’s big there. And with people working to bring in money to give to those children, you just can’t put words to it.”
Battleground staff hoped some athletes who would fall into the water during the race through The Gauntlet, wouldn’t care if they made it to end, as long as they could help those who made it back home.
