ST. LOUIS (KPLR) - Many St. Louis Catholics feel a particularly close tie to Pope John Paul II. He visited St. Louis in 1999. It was the last American city he visited.

John Paul II is a hero to conservatives for helping bring down communism. The other Pope that will be canonized, John the XXIII, is an icon for liberals. He is remembered for launching the reforming Second Vatican Council.

On the Pulse of St. Louis this week our panel of catholic experts see the dual canonizations as part Pope Francis' effort to call for unity in the church.

You can see the entire interview with our guests on the Pulse of St. Louis at 7 pm Saturday here on KPLR 11. The canonization ceremony will take place on Sunday at St. Peters Basilica at the Vatican.
