One killed in St. Charles RV fire

ST. CHARLES, MO (KPLR) – One person is dead after a mobile home fire Saturday morning in St. Charles. Emergency crews were called to the scene at the Cactus RV Park on Cactus Drive around 7:00 a.m.

“The heat from the flames was so intense, ” said  Frank Walker, a neighbor.

Walker and other neighbors said they tried to get the victim out of the RV.

“We tried to break into it.”

A St. Charles County sheriff’s deputy arrived first to the scene and also tried to get into the home. He had to be treated for smoke inhalation.

“He tried to go in, but was turned back by the flames,” Central County Fire Protection Chief Russ Mason said. “He was actually taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, but he has been treated and released.”

The victim has not been identified, but neighbors say it was a man in his 60’s.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but firefighters say it did not start in the kitchen. Neighbors describe the victim as “a heavy smoker.”
