GRANITE CITY, IL (KTVI)-- Illinois is already looking for the next generation of engineers, bridge builders and pilots.

The state department of transportation offered 300 middle and high school students a rare, hands on introduction to dozens of transportation careers.

Did you ever imagine building a bridge? For most of us it is just a day dream. But Wednesday Metro East students got a taste of the challenges that go with designing and constructing our infrastructure.

From operating a construction crane simulator, to pounding a nail and installing a stop sign, students discovered a wide range of potential careers during the IDOT sponsored career fair at America's Central Port in Granite City.

A computer program gave students a chance to try to design a safe, but cost effective bridge.

But it also gave these students a sense that they too can dream big dreams.
