Students participate in IDOT Career Day

GRANITE CITY, IL (KTVI)– Illinois is already looking for the next generation of engineers, bridge builders and pilots.

The state department of transportation offered 300 middle and high school students a rare, hands on introduction to dozens of transportation careers.

Did you ever imagine building a bridge? For most of us it is just a day dream. But Wednesday Metro East students got a taste of the challenges that go with designing and constructing our infrastructure.

From operating a construction crane simulator, to pounding a nail and installing a stop sign, students discovered a wide range of potential careers during the IDOT sponsored career fair at America’s Central Port in Granite City.

A computer program gave students a chance to try to design a safe, but cost effective bridge.

But it also gave these students a sense that they too can dream big dreams.
