USGS: Letter warning of impending large earthquake a ‘hoax’
LOS ANGELES, CA (KTLA) — The U.S. Geological Survey was warning residents Monday about a letter circulating on the Internet claiming that a large earthquake was imminent in Southern California.
The letter had a USGS logo and claimed to be from the agency.
The USGS issued an official statement on their Facebook page concerning the letter.
“USGS is aware of a letter circulating on the Internet that uses our logo and warns of an impending sizable earthquake in Southern California. USGS had no part in this letter or any alleged alert. USGS does not predict earthquakes. USGS distributes reliable and timely scientific information on earthquakes and makes it all available to the public.”
The letter surfaced following a recent series of earthquakes in Southern California including a magnitude 5.1 quake centered in La Habra on Friday.
