COLLISVILLE, IL (KTVI) - Collinsville Police said Ameren Illinois customers are being targeted by scam artists.
Police said the suspects are calling and claiming to work for Ameren Illinois. The crooks are demanding money, telling customers they have outstanding bills and asking for payment over the phone. The suspects even threaten to turn off the customer’s power unless they reveal their credit card or debit card information.
Police said this is a quick way for scam artists to rack up charges on your credit card, or wipe out your bank account. Investigators add Collinsville businesses have received the phone calls. None of the owners report falling for the scam.
An Ameren spokesman said the company will never threaten to turn off a customer’s power unless a bill is paid over the phone.
