The Pulse of St. Louis: Share Pregnancy and Infant Loss

(KPLR) -The statistics for infant loss are devastating. Medical experts say one in four pregnancies ends in miscarriage. A St. Louis region based organization has a special campaign on how to help families during their tragic loss.

Brian Henry and his wife felt alone and scared when they lost their daughter, Caroline, during pregnancy.

“We found out the bad news that Caroline’s heart had stopped and she was lost. And my wife gave birth to her two days later December 12th, 2006 and it was the toughest thing I’ve ever seen anybody have to do.”

Brian is now a board member of Share Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support, a national nonprofit organization located in St. Charles. Brian and three other share representatives joined us on “The Pulse of St. Louis” to talk about a new campaign called “30 Days of Share.” The goal is to raise $5,000 to produce a video to educate hospital staff and caregivers who help grieving parents.

Share development director Megan Nichols said, “This could be doctors and nurses and other support staff. This tool is going to allow them access to the education so that they know exactly what to say and what to do and how to really help those families.”

Nurse Pat Pudnik is a companion coordinator for Share. She told Dan, “Aometimes your hospital staff can exceed all their expectations, but to have somebody sit next to you that has experienced that loss or a loss similar and to say ‘I’ve been through this’ and ‘there is a way to get through your grief’.”
