Campaign to make MLB Opening Day a holiday strikes out

"Make Opening Day a Holiday” campaign

(KPLR)- No holiday this year.  The White House has officially responded to Budweiser’s “Make Opening Day a Holiday” campaign and the answer is “No.” The petition asked on WhiteHouse.gov’s We The People page for Opening Day to be a day of national observance via presidential proclamation.

In a response, Josh Earnest, Principal Deputy Press Secretary, says, “While we are sympathetic to your pitch to make Opening Day a national holiday, it’s a little outside our strike zone: creating permanent federal holidays is traditionally the purview of Congress. So, it’s up to the men and women on Capitol Hill to decide whether to swing at this pitch.”

Earnest also describes himself as a lifelong Kansas City Royals fan.

The petition to make Opening Day a national holiday received more than 100,000 signatures to send it to the White House. Cardinals Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith serves as the face of the campaign.
