Son saves mom as homeless man tries to rape her, police say
INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) — A homeless man is accused of bursting into a stranger’s home and trying to rape her.
The victim spoke out only to KCTV5 News about the terrifying ordeal with her granddaughter in the room and the last-minute intervention that saved her.
“He just busted in,” Destinee Akers said.
There was no time for her to react.
“He bear-hugged me and threw me on the couch and he was kissing my neck,” she said.
Police say the man who attacked her is 47-year-old Davidson Hosteen. He’s already a sex offender, and Akers believes he was going to rape her.
“Every time I would try to get up, he held me by my throat and held me down so I couldn’t get up, and all I could think about, is the baby’s over there,” Akers said.
Her 4-month-old granddaughter was home too, strapped into her car seat right by the front door. The attacker knocked the baby over when he came rushing in.
“I was scared because as soon as it hit, she screamed,” Akers said.
Baby Sicily has a couple small scratches but the car seat broke her fall, so she’s doing fine. The baby was all ready to go for her dad to pick her up, and that’s exactly what saved Akers.
“My son happened to pull up,” Akers said. “He saw that he was on top of me and he picked him up by the back of his shirt and just threw him.”
They called 911, and police found Hosteen nearby. He told officers he was drunk and must have blacked out. He is now charged with attempted rape.
Hosteen is homeless, and Akers has seen him walking around the neighborhood, but she says she didn’t know him and never imagined this terror.
“I felt violated and I felt like he must have been watching me when he was wandering around here,” Akers said. “He needs to go away for a while because he’s dangerous.”
Hosteen also admitted to police that he hadn’t registered as a sex offender like he’s supposed to.
He is being held in the Jackson County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
