Road crews battle ice to clear roads Sunday morning

(KTVI) – It has been a challenging winter storm to fight for road crews on both sides of the river. In fact, MoDOT’s District Maintenance Engineer Becky Allmeroth describes it as a “battle” that won’t easily be won.

The first wave of the storm that moved in Saturday night into Sunday morning was ice and sleet. The sleet was very heavy and difficult to plow. That slowed down clearing operations for MoDOT.

MoDOT has had full crews going since Saturday afternoon; that means 210 trucks and 500 workers.

MoDOT says the worst of the ice and sleet was north and west of St. Louis.

Allmeroth says now that the first phase is pretty much done it is prime time for road crews to make progress clearing the roads before the expected heavier snow moves in later Sunday. Conditions Sunday morning were very treacherousand even road crew trucks have slid off the road, and cars have hit road crew trucks.

She adds, if you start seeing some pavement on the roads don’t get over-confident, there could be black ice basically anywhere.

Allmeroth says even with the non-stop efforts of road crews, she expects the Monday morning commute to be messy and difficult.
