Winning gold could mean big bucks for T.J. Oshie
ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)– He’s been nicknamed TJ Sochi, the St. Louis center and right winger is the center of social attention.
He`s gained more than 130,000 followers after his four goal greatness in Saturday`s overtime shootout win over Russia.
But now the pressure is on.
“He’s got to help not only his team win gold but it also wouldn’t hurt if he helped the Blues win a Stanley Cup,” says Patrick Rishe.
Webster University Professor of Economics Patrick Rishe says if Oshie can grab some gold, he’ll be raking in some silver.
“LeBron James and Kobe Bryant making $30-million plus in endorsements,” says Rishe. “Payton Manning making $18 million in endorsements. And of course golfers Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods making $40-50 million in endorsements.”
Barack Obama is a fan, but because hockey isn’t as big as say, basketball, the incredible Oshie might not make as much.
“You have to consider the top hockey endorser Sidney Crosby of Canada is pulling in about four or five million annually in endorsements,” says Rishe. “TJ Oshie is considered to be a good hockey player but again not in the upper echelon of players.”
He didn’t make the Olympic cut in 2010 and was a late add for this year’s team USA. But this sharpshooter might consider a run for sheriff, since he can mend fences with rivals.
“It was incredible,” says Ben Cardott.
“I thought it was outstanding,” says his brother Brendan.
“Even though you’re Blackhawk fans?” asks Patrick Clark.
“US Fans,” says Brendan.
Maybe he should be recognized next to Hullie and Federko and McInnis. But first he has to win some gold.
