(KPLR) – Illinois’s Attorney General was on Capitol Hill Wednesday, where she took part in an congressional hearing about data security following the recent hacking of Target and other retailers.

Lisa Madigan told members of congress the country is facing an epidemic of data breaches, causing billions of dollars in damage to the economy.

She says her office's ID theft unit has received more than 40,000 requests since it was founded in 2006.

Madigan explained that many other countries are using chip and pin security that decreases fraud nearly 50 percent, suggesting that the U.S. should upgrade its data security systems.
