Can cursing ruin your career?
(KPLR) – There’s a saying in the broadcasting business, “when it comes to cursing, the mic is always live.” Swearing on the air can quickly lead to unemployment.
But what about off the air in your business or workplace? Susan Wilson Solovic swears it’s a bad idea.
* MAKES YOU LOOK LESS INTELLIGENT. There are thousands of words in the English language — and more being created all the time. Ten years ago would you ever say “google it?” Choose something else to make your point. A CareerBuilder survey found 54 percent of employers think workers who use profanity frequently are less intelligent.
* LEGAL ISSUES. While you might think a particular choice of words is just funny — someone else may have a very different opinion. Particularly language relating to gender, sex or body parts is problematic. Another employee could say they you’ve created a hostile and oppressive work environment and sue for sexual harassment. Cussing may violate their religious beliefs. It’s fraught with peril.
* PROFANITY CAN GET YOU FIRED OR AT THE VERY LEAST LIMIT YOUR CAREER options. Some firms have employee policies on the use of profanity. And it could get your fired if you violate company policy. But let’s assume there isn’t a policy. According the Career Builder survey — 64 percent of employers say they would think less of a worker who swears repeatedly and 57 percent say they’d be less likely to promote such an employee.
* WHY TAKE THE RISK. Regardless of how old fashioned you may think I’m being, my question is — why take the risk. Do what you want in your personal social circles and family, but leave the potty mouth at the door at work.
