CHICAGO (CNN) -Two people are dead after a dramatic rescue attempt on the icy Chicago River this morning.

The Chicago Fire Department says a 21-year-old woman went into the river around midnight.

Police and fire had to come try and save her and the two others who tried to rescue the woman.

Officials say visibility was poor and the ice on the water hampered their efforts.

The water is so cold — divers couldn’t stay in for long.

Rescuers could not find the woman and say she is presumed dead.

Both men were taken to a hospital, where one died of his injuries.
