EDWARDSVILLE, IL (KTVI)– If you are a parent wishing your kids were back in school, you are not alone.
“I think they`re driving Mommy nuts,” said Devon Parrill as she laughed. Parrill brought her son to the Edison`s Entertainment complex to burn off some energy.
The complex has been a popular destination this week. Laser tag, bowling and an arcade keep kids entertained.
“All the kids are at home getting stir-crazy,” said Parrill.
We checked with several area school districts to find out why they chose to cancel school for the rest of the week. In some cases it was because busses still cannot access certain roads. Other superintendents told us snow piles are in the way of bus stops. They said some students would have nowhere safe to stand while they wait for the bus.
The superintendent of the Edwardsville School District said his district is 185 square miles and includes many rural roads that are still impassable. He also mentioned the hazard of snow piles at many bus stop locations.
Below are two recent letters sent home to parents in the Edwardsville School District. One explains the reasons for the cancelations and the other explains changes to the school calendar.
January 9, 2014
School will be canceled on Friday, January 10. The snowfall from last night into this morning was a little more than was forecast, which has complicated the already difficult clean-up from the previous major snowfall and extreme temperatures.
While many of our main streets are clear, many rural areas, subdivisions, and most of the city sidewalks within the District`s 185 square mile boundaries have not been cleared of snow. There simply is no place for students to stand while waiting to catch the bus without them being in harm`s way. The county and local municipalities are working tirelessly to clear area roadways; however, conditions continue to be dangerous for our students waiting at bus stops and walking to school.
Yesterday and again today, the District is busy repairing water pipes that have burst due to the frigid weather in recent days. In addition, over the next three days, we can expect to deal with some leaky roofs as a result of the warm-up, significant rain, and possible flooding that have been predicted.
We can only hope that this difficult weather will be behind us, and we can move toward a more consistent schedule for the remainder of the 2013-2014 school year.
Thank you for your support in keeping our children safe.
January 8, 2014
As you are aware, the Metro-East is experiencing the worst winter weather in nearly 20 years. As a result, the District has already exhausted the five (5) emergency days built in to the 2013-2014 school calendar.
The last day of student attendance, which was originally scheduled for May 20, 2014, is now scheduled for May 28, 2014.
We want to remind parents that the District covers 185 square miles, much of it rural. While roads and sidewalks may be cleared in town, the District must consider the safety of all of its students when deciding whetherschool should be canceled. And, while we will make every effort to have school tomorrow, Thursday, January 9, we will check road and side street conditions in order to make a decision regarding the ability of our buses to transport our students safely.
If the District is forced to cancel school due to inclement weather or other emergency during the remainder of the 2013-2014 school year, the District will utilize the provision in the Illinois School Code to apply to the Regional Superintendent for an ‘act of God’ exemption that prevents districts from having to make up more than five (5) emergency days. As a result, the last day of student attendance will remain May 28, 2014, even if additional emergency days are necessary.
Due to the cancellation of school, the distribution of report cards will take place as follows:
• Elementary report cards will be sent home on January 17.
• Middle school and high school reports cards will be mailed on January 16.
Class of 2014 Graduation
The graduation ceremony for the Class of 2014 will take place as scheduled on May 24, 2014.
