Road crews using beet juice, brine and salt to keep ice off roads

ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) -  Winter weather is moving into the area and road crews are working to keep the highways as passable as possible.  They’re using special formulas to help keep the roads free of ice and snow.

MoDOT says they’ve been using beet juice for years, especially when temperatures dip below 25 degrees to help the salt melt the snow.

Now they’ve found if they add beet juice to brine and salt in higher temperatures, it improves the melting power.

IDOT will have about 125 trucks out in its district and MoDOT will have 200 vehicles hitting the roads this evening. 

It’s not officially even winter yet, but there could still be a lot of snow on the way.  Several school districts south of St. Louis are looking to have more than a week of school to make up because of the snow.

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education say school districts must make up every day they miss for the first six days.

After that, they have to make up one day for every two they miss, up to 10 days.  Many of the districts in St. Francois County have already missed six days this winter.
