Birth of identical triplets defies the odds

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CNN) – Hannah and Tom Hepner are the proud parents of identical triplets. But these aren’t just any identical triplets, they’re extremely rare because they were conceived naturally – without fertility drugs.

The chances of a naturally occurring identical triplet birth are between one in a million and one in 200 million.

The babies are named Abby, Brin and Laurel. They weighed 11-pound – combined – at birth.

My wife and I are expecting triplets as well without the help of fertility drugs. These triplets are not identical but are spontaneous. Currently, we have two children, ages 7 and 4. We are about four months and live about 65 miles south of St. Louis in Potosi. We are delivering at Mercys. This was a complete shock to us because multiples do not run in our family. Plus, we wasn’t planning on having any more children. We are still in shock and probably will be until the triplets arrive.
