Hazelwood students web chat with Bill Gates
HAZELWOOD, MO (KTVI)– Area students got a chance to talk to Bill Gates Monday on a web chat.
The students are in the Hazelwood School District’s gifted education program called Galactic.
And these 5th graders were one of eight schools selected to talk to the Microsoft founder.
One of the things they talked about Monday, computer science, which 90% of the schools in the U.S. don’t teach.
They’ve been learning how to code this week.
Monday students here were allowed to ask one question, who was your role model and why they were important to you.
The opportunity and chat are part of the hour of code event where students learned to write computer code as part of Computer Science Education Week.
The Galactic students were learning how to build their own angry birds kind of game.
The hour of code is an open door to greater success in school but, life in general.
Teachers say the logical, sequential thinking can then be applied in math, science, chemistry, physics or anywhere they choose to go in life.
Gates answer to his influence, people like Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt.
