ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) – Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has signed same sex marriage into law.

Last February Illinois state senators voted to legalize gay marriage. By a slim margin earlier this month the house also approved same sex unions. The Illinois measure is the latest in a series of recent victories for gay rights coming after Hawaii’s Governor signed gay marriage into law last week after New Jersey Governor Chris Christie dropped his legal opposition to such unions last month.

A year ago only six states and the District of Columbia recognized same sex marriage. That number has now more than doubled. The gay marriage law takes effect June 1st.

The leadership of the Catholic church in Illinois opposes the law.

Gay marriage is not legal in Missouribut the state does recognize same-sex marriages for tax purposes.
