(KPLR) – Pope Francis surprises followers and church leaders by sending a new survey to parishes around the world.

The survey asks parishioners for their opinions on issues facing modern families. He’s giving them a chance to weigh in on everything from gay marriage to surrogate mothers and divorce.

Vatican watchers say the move is extraordinary because it seeks input from rank-and-file Catholics and touches on controversial issues which might have been off-limits in the past.

The results will be presented at next year’s Synod of Bishops.
