Time to say goodbye? Four Cardinal players file for free agency
(KTVI) – It was a busy first day of the off season for the Cardinals, one day after losing the World Series in six games to the Boston Red Sox. The team arrived around 1:00pm Thursday after losing Game Six, 6-1 the night before in Boston.
The first day after the season ends, any player eligible to become a free agent, can file with the league on that first day.
Four Cardinals players filed on the first day, Carlos Beltran, Chris Carpenter, Rafael Furcal and Edward Mujica.
The Cardinals also announced they were buying out the one year, $9 million option on pitcher Jake Westbrook’s contract for 2014. The Cardinals paid Westbrook $1 million to buy out his option, voiding the contract and allowing Westbrook to become a free agent, too.
Here is sound from Carlos Beltran and Cardinals GM John Mozeliak. Beltran said the Cardinals know he wants to remain in St. Louis. Mozeliak states there is interest, but they need to work the numbers for the 2014 Cardinals budget, before possibly offering a contract extension to Beltran.
