Woman, 2 children killed in I-55 crash
MT. OLIVE, IL (KTVI) – A woman and two young children were killed in an accident along Interstate 55 Friday morning near Litchfield, Illinois.
Illinois State Police are investigating the crash. They tell us two other children and an adult were also hurt in the crash and are hospitalized Friday afternoon.
The accident happened about 5:20am Friday two miles south of Litchfield on I-55 north.
Investigators say a Chevy Impala with six people in it – two adults in the front and four kids in the back – for some reason either stopped or was going very slow on the interstate.
A white cargo van slammed into the back of the Impala.
Illinois State Police tell us two of the children and the woman in the front passenger seat were pronounced dead at the scene.
The two other children who were hurt were both taken to Cardinal Glennon where they are being treated.
The adult man who was driving the Impala was taken to a Litchfield hospital, then flown to Springfield, where he is hospitalized.
Investigators say both of the children who were killed were young; one was in a car seat.
Authorities believe all of the people in the Impala are likely related, but they aren’t sure yet. We’re told the Impala is registered to a Metro East address.
We don’t know the conditions of the children at Cardinal Glenn, nor the Impala driver.
Police say the driver of the van was not hurt.
At this point, investigators don’t know why the Impala was either stopped or slowed on the highway.
State police say DUI tests on the van driver came back clean and that he has been cooperative.
Tests will be done on the Impala driver to see if he was impaired at all.
