Teen shot and killed while waiting for school bus
ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – A 16-year-old Sumner High School student was chased down and shot to death while on his way to school Tuesday morning. James Moore of the 58-hundred block of Selber Court in North St. Louis had been waiting to catch a school bus on Goodfellow near St. Louis. St. Louis police say a masked man got out of a car and began firing shots at Moore. The teen ran across ball fields in Barrett Brothers Park trying to escape. He collapsed and died in the outfield of a baseball field about 100 yards inside the park.
The gunman left in a Dodge Charger. Tuesday afternoon St. Louis police spotted a car matching the suspected vehicle and pursued it into Jennings. Three individuals were taken into custody, a female and two males. Authorities were questioning them to determine if they were responsible for the homicide. Investigators have determined they have no connection to the homicide of James Moore. The occupants of the vehicle will face Felony Fleeing charges.
Neighbors in the area were upset and angry that a teen heading to school had been killed in a city park. Karen Mosley said her family had just put a young niece on a school bus at the same stop ten to 15 minutes before the shooting. ‘Then next thing we know we hear gun shots, we see the boy running across the park and he just killed him dead in the park..in the middle of the park in broad daylight!’ Mosley said as she shook her head. ‘We got to get a hold of these young guys cause things is just happening for no reason to me,’ she said.
Police have not yet said what the motive might have been for the shooting.
St. Louis City public schools sent in a team of counselors to help students at Sumner H.S. deal with the violent death of a classmate. Parents and students who have information about feuds or other potential violence among students are asked to call the School District`s Security Hotline at 314-241-7577.
