Poplar Street Bridge getting a new name
ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – One of St. Louis` most legendary congressmen now has one our area`s most well-known bridges named after him. The Missouri stretch of what`s commonly known as the Poplar Street Bridge is now officially the Congressman William L Clay Senior Bridge.
The sign was unveiled at a downtown ceremony this morning. All kinds of dignitaries were in attendance including Governor Jay Nixon who signed the legislation in July approving the name change.
Clay served in congress for 32 years and was the first African American representative from Missouri.
“It`s a great honor to have anything of significance named after you. I think it says that what I did during my lifetime is worth others emulating,” said Clay.
Clay was praised for his civil rights efforts and the many pieces of legislation he helped pass including the Family Medical Leave Act.
