The rest of the world can’t believe the US got shut down by the GOP
ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) – Americans have been called low-information voters. Which is a social scientist’s way of saying we’re either dumb or we just don’t pay attention. Exhibit A: A recent poll showing that 46 percent of Americans oppose Obamacare and 36 percent oppose the Affordable Care Act; even though they’re the same thing. So, it’s not surprising that a lot of Americans have no idea of the consequences of the government shutdown. And they certainly don’t know what might happen on October 17th if the debt ceiling isn’t raised and the us government starts defaulting on some debt. We may not know or care but the rest of the world does.
The BBC, for example, noted that in the middle of a civil war Syria has kept the government working and has paid it’s bills. Pakistan, in 30 years of wars, coups, bombings, drone strikes and instability. Even Pakistan has never shut its government down or threatened to default on it’s debts. And you know it’s bad when the Russians take pot shots. The Moscow Times wondered how the rest of the world can trust a country where a minority can close the government and threaten debt default. Germany’s Der Speigel wondered how a superpower could paralyze itself.
In Paris, the Le Monde newspaper appealed to France’s favorite American politician Thomas Jefferson to wake up. If anyone knows about a radical political minority taking control in it is Germany. The Zeit newspaper wrote about, “A small group of Republican ideologues in the House of Representatives being responsible for this disaster.”
It wasn’t a foreigner, but Missouri’s own GOP senator Roy Blunt who warns the shutdown endangers American national security overseas because roughly half of all CIA personnel have been furloughed without pay.
This could just be the start. If congress doesn’t raise what’s called the debt limit or debt ceiling. By October 17th the United States government would start defaulting on some of it’s bills. Some foreign commentators took note. one in South Korea wrote, “The government shutdown shows the United States has lost its mind.” A government default would show the United States has decided to commit suicide.
