The Doctor Is In: Managing Cholesterol Levels
(KPLR) – Dr. Sonny Saggar stopped by the studio to talk about a very prominent concern in the healthcare field, high cholesterol.
Primary care physicians should be monitoring your levels on a regular basis, but not everyone goes to the doctor.
However, for patients who come to Dr. Saggar’s clinic, he offers free cholesterol panels.
The screening test that is usually performed is a blood test called a lipid profile. Many experts recommend that men aged 35 and older and women aged 45 and older be more frequently screened for lipid disorders.
The lipid (or lipoprotein) profile includes:
● LDL (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, also called “bad cholesterol’)
● HDL (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, also called “good cholesterol’)
● Triglycerides (the actual fats carried around in the blood from the food we eat. Excess calories, alcohol, or sugar in the body are converted into triglycerides and stored in fat cells throughout the body.)
In order to reduce you cholesterol levels, it is best to reduce desserts and other excess carbs such as alcohol.
Also, quitting smoking or losing weight, have a good effect, but not that much.
Avoid saturated fats (butter, lard, stick margarine) to reduce LDL and use more canola oil or olive oil.
Although dietary modification is best, there are drugs called statins that inhibit an enzyme which controls cholesterol production in the liver. The medicine actually slow down the cholesterol production process.
