Police officer gets racist letter allegedly from another officer
ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)– St. Louis police are investigating a threatening racist letter left for one of their colleagues, allegedly by one of their colleagues.
The letter, found in the departmental mailbox of an African-American officer stationed at the Third District in South St. Louis, was found last week. It had been typed and delivered in a sealed envelope addressed to the officer.
Fox 2 News has obtained a copy of the letter.
It reads: ‘You black (expletive) (RACIAL SLUR). We want you out of our station. We want your black (expletive) DEAD. (Expletive) your medals. If an AID call comes out for you we won`t respond. KILL YOUSELF (RACIAL SLUR) OR WE WILL. Respectfully South Patrol.’
A source says the mention of the officer`s medals is a reference those he won while representing the district in an athletic competition.
Sgt. David Bonenberger , President of the St. Louis Police Officers Association called the letter ‘reprehensible.’
“It is not representative of the men and women of this police department, and I have the utmost faith in our chief that he is going to get to the bottom of it and find out who is ultimately responsible, and they will be held accountable,” Bonenberger said.
The officer who received the letter met last week with Adolphus Pruitt, President of the St. Louis chapter of the NAACP, and left him with the impression there is at the very least, some subtle racial tension in the department.
But the letter is anything but subtle.
“If a law enforcement officer, white, is prepared to make those types of threats, and take no action when a fellow officer may need aid, simply because he is a black officer, I cannot begin to imagine his attitude when he interacts on the streets with African-Americans and maybe Hispanics,” Pruitt said.
In a written statement, Chief Sam Dotson said, “Racism or discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated within the department and such behavior is not reflective of the men and women sworn to protect and serve the citizens of St. Louis.”
Dotson has ordered both an internal and a criminal investigation into the matter. For his safety, the officer has been moved to a different district.
“The letter says in no uncertain terms we want you dead,” Pruitt said.
“Shocking is too mild of a word for this situation.”
